Google Earth KML/KMZ File Downloads


Below are links to the various KML or KMZ files that I have compiled.

Global Seismicity Files

Each of these files covers an area of the globe that is 20° wide and is two one half hemispheres in depth, i.e.

from 90°S to 45°S and 45°S to 0° or 90°N to 45°N and 45°N to 0°

This gives a total of 9 files for each quadrant of the globe or 36 in total. This may seem a large number of files that could be reduced but I don’t envisage these as permanent fixtures in your Google Earth and if you are studying one area you do not need to load everything.

Loading one or more of the larger files could make Google Earth very unresponsive if you have a medium to low powered computer.

I have a dual core 3GHz Pentium with 3 GB RAM and two of the larger files makes Google Earth very difficult. I find it best to load and not display the information (the default state), position where I wish to view, and then turn the visibility on.

All the data is coloured by depth in accordance with the USGS colours on their Google Earth add in for earthquakes. The dot sizes however do not reflect the depth or magnitude since the purpose of these is to view seismicity and not have the working area covered with large icons obscuring visibility.

There will eventually also be a single coloured version with a 50% smaller dot.

All data is sourced from ANSS (Advanced National Seismic System) hosted by the NCEDC (Northern California Earthquake Data Center) to whom I am grateful for providing public access to the data. The files are for Magnitude 5 and above from 1898 to February 2012. Each magnitude band is a switchable section in the KML file.
