Weekly Geophysical: 01 August 2014

Summary of report week: USGS is listing 28 events, EMSC is listing 32 events and GFZ Potsdam is listing 30 events. You can view each of these listings below. There were 5 active tropical storms during the week of the report of which 2 were category force in the report week. Max 5 actively erupting volcanoes on any one day out of 7 during the week, over and above the 17 always erupting.
Using converted magnitudes (mb to Mw etc) USGS converts to 62 events and EMSC converts to 80 events. Potsdam events cannot normally be converted as the scale is not always known.

Volcanoes

Volcano information gathered from various sources, including the Smithsonian Weekly Volcanic Activity Report from which confirmation of reports is taken. A volcano is only included in the listing if there is significant ash above 1km height (white/steam clouds are not counted) or there is a significant lava flow. Crater incandescence, unless accompanied by the either of the preceding does qualify as an eruption.

Ceased erupting – Pavlof

The eruption of Pavlof Volcano has ended, and the volcano has returned to its background state. Lava fountaining was last observed at Pavlof in mid-June, and the volcano has exhibited gradually declining levels of unrest since that time. Seismic data are now at background levels. Consequently, AVO is lowering the Aviation Color Code to GREEN and the Volcano Alert Level to NORMAL.

Rockfalls and small avalanches of debris may occur intermittently on the north-northwest flank of the volcano. Drainages leading away from the north flank of Pavlof are susceptible to small lahars and minor floods as long as hot material remains high on the slopes of the volcano where it could mix with ice and snow.

Pavlof has, in past eruptions, resumed activity after pauses as long as 55 days, and AVO continues to monitor the volcano closely for signs of renewed activity. We expect hours to days of increased seismicity prior to a resumption of eruptive activity.

Alaska Volcano Observatory (Current Volcanic Activity)

SHISHALDIN VOLCANO 54°45’19” N 163°58’16” W, Summit Elevation 9373 ft (2857 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Elevated surface temperatures were observed in the summit crater throughout the past week. A steam plume from the summit area was also observed in webcam images. The observed temperatures are consistent with low-level lava spatter and/or very hot vent conditions. Lava remains confined to the summit crater. No ash emissions have been observed in satellite data, and seismic activity continues at a very low level. These observations are consistent with those observed throughout the current eruption, which began in March 2014.

CLEVELAND VOLCANO 52°49’20” N 169°56’42” W, Summit Elevation 5676 ft (1730 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Unrest continues but no eruptive activity was observed over the past week. Scientists working on the island this week have observed a continuous gas and steam plume emitted from the summit crater and occasional rock falls, but no sign of eruptive activity. Satellite observations during clear periods show persistent mildly elevated surface temperatures in the summit crater and typical steam/gas emissions.

Comparison of daily category attaiment and duration category attainment
CFStorms_Dur-Day-Compare_20140801
(Click the Image for a larger/clearer version)

The comparison chart above shows the Category force storms as they are reported for the duration of the storm. This generally includes the lead in period as the storm builds and the lead out as it decreases to tropical storm or lower force, i.e. under category force.

The day element of the comparison only shows where a storm is reported as being category force. For any day that the storm is being reported as category force the higher of any force value is taken.

If we look at a storm such as ITA we can see that the storm duration was reported as from 04 April to 14 April. Up to 0600 Zulu (GMT/UTC) on 08 April the storm was a Tropical storm. During the 8th it was Cyclone 1 so for the 8th it is counted as one unit of force. Sown below as )

On the 9th it was one, rising to Cyclone 2 by the evening so it is counted as 2 ** for the day. On the 10th it was 4 )))) and on the 11th it was Cyclone 4 dropping to Cyclone 1 so the whole day is counted as Cyclone 4 ****. It was back to a tropical storm again on the 12th.

The comparison gives one a better idea than using just the duration since ITA was 11 days duration, but was only Category 4 on 2 of those days.
